THE PINK PANTHER SHOW (NBC, 1969-1978; ABC, 1978-1980) was an anomaly among its peers. The show consisted of previous theatrical entries compiled into a series of half-hour showcases, which included other theatrical short films featuring THE INSPECTOR, The ANT AND THE AARDVARK and TIJUANA TOADS (redubbed as TEXAS TOADS for TV). The original theatrical versions did not contain laugh tracks, but NBC insisted on its inclusion for television broadcast. The soundtracks were restored to their original form in 1982 when the DFE theatrical package went into syndication. Repackaging over the years has resulted in both theatrical and television versions of the entries being available. The exceptions were MISTERJAW and CRAZYLEGS CRANE, which were produced specifically for television and never re-released theatrically, resulting in laughter-only versions. Buyers should aware that, with a few exceptions, these are the television versions. Opening and closing credits are replaced with brief title cards, and Henry Mancini's iconic "Pink Panther Theme" was replaced with "Panther, Pink Panther," written specifically for the original 1969 broadcast. Television purists and collectors demanded that MGM make these television versions available, as this is how most viewers originally remembered them. This format is meant for that audience. The cartoons themselves, of course, are classics. Warner Bros. legend Friz Freleng was responsible for these masterpieces. MGM was not after a money grab here, but rather acquiesced to fans willing to shell out money for these television versions. And for that, we the purists thank MGM.

Originally broadcast on Saturday mornings in the 1969-70 season, "The Pink Panther Show" is an anthology of theatrical short cartoons spawned from the eponymous live-action comedy film series. In addition to the Pink Panther himself, these episodes also feature "The Inspector", a French police detective loosely based on Inspector Clouseau (the protagonist of the aforementioned live-action films). I ought to explain to those who wrote the negative reviews that these episodes were taken straight from the 1969 Saturday morning series. The cartoons would not be broadcast on TV with their original opening credits until the Pink Panther began running in syndication several years later.

On earth would anyone pay this much for 32 cartoons?
  • Not what you would expect

I think a lot of ppl here gave 5 stars just because of the fact that this beloved cartoon is out in itunes. But this is far from what i was expecting. The intro is something that i dont recognize at all And what is the deal with this inspector cartoon Packaged in here? The actual pink panther material is only fraction of what you paid for.
