Description

What’s a modern day cop doing in 1973? While hot on the trail of a serial killer in New York City in 2008, Detective Sam Tyler loses track of his partner, Maya Daniels. Fearing the worst and wracked with guilt, he gets hit by a car. But that’s just the beginning of his troubles. When he wakes up, he’s in 1973. He’s not sure how, but the one thing he does know is that his future is inexplicably linked with this past. If he wants to find his way back, he’s going to have to learn to rely on his “new” 1970s era partners and their own methods of police work — which mostly involve their fists. Starring Harvey Keitel, Michael Imperioli, Gretchen Mol and Jason O’Mara, Life On Mars is a gritty, fascinating new take on the procedural crime drama.

  • Nauseatingly Bad

I bought this thinking it would be something like the original, British version of the show. The American version is nauseatingly bad. Harvey Keitel is 80 years old and probably weighs 120 lbs but in this show, one blow of his mightly fist sends someone twice his weight flying. Give me a break. The worst part of the show is the lead actor who feels he must act as stupid as he looks.

I have both this version and the BBC version (had to "enhance" my DVD player to accept the UK discs.) Neither version lasted as long as I would have liked & I felt a bit cheated by the way both ended. If you have the BBC version you will also want to pickup up "Ashes to Ashes" which is a sequel to "Life on Mars" & ties things up very nicely. One minor annoyance with this version & I am not sure who goofed is that S01E05 ("Things to Do in New York When You Think You're Dead") is labeled S01E04 creating 2 episode 4s & no episode 5.
  • Weak Main Character

Keitel and The Artist formerly known as Moltesanti are good, the show is not great but could be really good if the lead character weren’t such a stereotypical bore with no personality. The lead would have been the key to the show—this guy is just your typical Hollywood hunk type with a frustrating lack of any individuality.
  • Actually, I kind of liked it...

While the original U.K. version of LOM will always be my favorite, I found this version very entertaining, too. Not better...just different. I think I might have liked the premiere episode even more if they have made the episode a bit longer, and allowed up to get to know these versions of the characters a bit more. I will say this, I LOVED THE MUSIC!!! And, it was fun to be taken back to a 1973's New York City!!! (Though, I do have one question for iTunes, is there any chance that you might make the original "Life on Mars" available, too? Maybe at a later date? Even if it's a way later date, I think it would be nice to be able to download that one, too). (Updating in May 2013: Still waiting for iTunes to add the UK version, please. Or, at the very least, allow us to download from the UK store).

I just happened to find it while flipping thru Netflix while recovering from surgery. Idk WHY it was only picked up for one season- fabulous acting, intriguing story line and AWESOME music from my high school/ college days. Soo disappointed that it didn't run longer. I've probably watched the episodes more than Jason OH Mara has!! :) ( for other Jason fans- check out Terra Nova and Vegas- outstanding!!! Thank you, Jason)

This is a great show that was sadly canceled. Great music. Tongue-in-cheek comedy. good suspense and mystery. Fortunately, the Producers had enough time to wrap the series up with a finale. I wished it had continued, so very much. It's free on Netflix.

Too bad this show only survived one season. The chemistry between the cast was grade A. I enjoyed watching Harvey Keitel, Michael Imperioli, and some of the cameos from the Sopranos. They should have made this show on A&E and we might have had a couple more seasons.
  • Life on Mars - A spectacular genre homage

I have watched the UK version of Life on Mars, as well as the prequel Ashes to Ashes and I must say I really enjoyed watching the US version. They didn't cut and paste the same plot and narrative from the original which I appreciated. I am a big fan of gritty 70's films - Dog Day Afternoon, The Conversation, Serpico, Mean Streets etc. and Life on Mars rewrote the genre in a fun tongue in cheek way. So many good references for film buffs!
  • British or American, pick your poison first..

Is the UK version better than the US version? depends on who you ask. The US ending is trip-ier. The UK version is probably a little better but the US version has a better ending , I think.. Truth is, the episodes seem to be the same stories, just redone. so you should watch whatever version is yours, first. If your American, your going to get all the inside stuff, where the UK version little insiders will go over your head. They are both fantastic, but the UK version, you pretty much know the ending, the US version, you think you do, but your thrown a wallop the last ten minutes.
