Description

The Deep Blue Sea stars Academy Award winner Rachel Weisz in a stunning performance that ranks as perhaps the best of her career and one of the strongest of the year, garnering a Golden GlobeĀ® nomination and New York Critics' Circle Award for Best Actress. Master chronicler of post-War England Terence Davies directs Weisz as Hester Collyer, the wife of an upper-class judge (Simon Russell Beale) and a free spirit trapped in a passionless marriage. Her encounter with Freddie Page (Tom Hiddleston), a troubled former RAF pilot, throws her life into turmoil, as their erotic relationship leaves her emotionally stranded and physically isolated.

  • Empty Tortured Characters Drown in Requim for Tortured Souls

As others have written, we watched this because of the cast. The acting is quite good. The problem is that the entire movie was well acted torment and torture. It was excruciating human agony put to very heavy requial music which is mixed way too far forward. A suicidal melodrama that is exactly not what we hoped for from such an illustrious cast. I am truly sorry to say, I would not recommend to anyone. I can't believe that this film rates an 80% on Rotten Tomatoes. 5 on Rotten Tomatoes.

I rented it because of the reviews. This was awful. None of the chemistry between any of the characters was believable. I wasted an hour and a half of my life that I'll never get back. I kept hoping she would successfully kill herself so the movie would end and put me out of my misery.
  • Captures Beauty, Depth and Emotion

Ahh what to say. I adore the actors of course, but the beauty is in the reality and sadness is the take itself. If you are familiar with the play, the movie will come as no surprise. It is deeply emotional and explores the desperation of these characters to find love and peace in their lives. It's not an action piece or even really a period piece. It is the study of emotion and relationship within the lives of these characters. I highly recommend it.

I liked it well enough, but there didn't seem to be a climax to the story. It just kind of... ended. I watched it because of Tom Hiddleston, and wasn't dissappointed by the overall acting (although Freddie Page is a jerk!) Maybe sit this one out...

I saw this film, when it was in the theater. I liked it. But all I could hear in my head watching it was Bonnie Raitt singing " I Can't Make You Love Me", because essentially it was the theme of the movie!

Tom Hiddleston and Rachel Weisz are great actors; no doubt about that. It was thoughtfully laid out and all the scenes were meaningful. I wouldn't recommend it though because it's just... such a "bummer". It had a happy ending in a way but not the one you'd want. I'm looking for another movie to watch after it so I won't feel so freaking depressed.

Not fair to write a review really because I simply could not watch all of it...so ponderously dull. Kept wanting to give Rachel's character a swift kick...what a self-absorbed brat. Had no interest in her pain, felt she deserved whatever she got, but couldn't be bothered to see it delivered. Those of you who like this sort of thing may find it the sort of thing you like, but it's hard to imagine why.
