Description

With stirring songs of faith, love, and hope, the Jesus Music movement rose from America’s 1960s counterculture to become a worldwide phenomenon. This fascinating documentary reveals Jesus Music’s uplifting, untold story — from its humble beginnings at the Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa, California, through its transformation into the multimillion-dollar industry of Christian Contemporary music. Featuring intimate interviews with the genre’s biggest stars — including Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, TobyMac, and Kirk Franklin — this love letter to CCM fans reveals the trials and triumphs of the artists who have devoted their lives to sharing their faith through the universal power of music.

The Jesus Music documentary may have been better titled the history of the Contemporary Christian Music Movement. The actual music takes a back seat to the musicians, and a limited number are included. There is so much more to tell about the songs themselves, yet this is largely ignored. The documentary is produced by Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith, thus a great deal second half is devoted to them. Phil Keaggy is mentioned for 5 seconds, then it’s back to more about Amy. There certainly was resistance to this music, but you’ll hear nothing but negative comments about the church. The tone is condescending, especially from the CCM media. What started as uplifting storytelling, continues into the second half as a sour note. We are told that early on Amy was kept in her place as a humble inoffensive subservient woman, but boy did she get back at those squares. Ummm…yeah….”Jesus Music”…sure.
  • A wide range, some depth

I thought this documentary covered a wide range of music topics over the years with some depth to a few artists, some music performances and very little time with a long list of artist appearances. I think it’s hard to put 50 yrs summary in less than 2hrs so perhaps a series will come that has more depth to each artist, the Jesus music and struggles and walk with Jesus along their journey. I enjoyed watching and learning from the stories that were told.

Little actually about Jesus here, just a low grade commercial for the corrupt “Christian” music industry
  • Really good, but would be fantastic as a Series

Really good, told an overviewing story, hit the biggest actors. This concept would be great put to a series format, each episode focused on different genres, different decades.
  • So much put in. So much left out.

Wish this were a series...so many artists left out. What it has is really good, but there is just so much more to the history of this music and artists and influencers...really good, but could have so much more.

Felt more like a infomercial than a documentary
