Description

Ethan Hawke lights up the screen as jazz legend Chet Baker, whose tumultuous life is thrillingly reimagined with wit, verve, and style to burn. In the 1950s, Baker was one of the most famous trumpeters in the world, renowned as both a pioneer of the West Coast jazz scene and an icon of cool. By the 1960s, he was all but washed up, his career and personal life in shambles due to years of heroin addiction. In his innovative anti-biopic, director Robert Budreau zeroes in on Baker's life at a key moment in the 1960s, just as the musician attempts to stage a hard-fought comeback, spurred in part by a passionate romance with a new flame (Carmen Ejogo). Creatively blending fact with fiction and driven by Hawke's virtuoso performance, Born to Be Blue unfolds with all the stylistic brio and improvisatory genius of great jazz.

  • Born to Be Blue - That dark obsession

Chet Baker's work has new meaning to me after watching this movie. We all would be so lucky as to be consumed by a joyous dark passion. A indulgent obsession with that one thing in life that enlightens your soul. This insight to the life, music and muse of Baker's reminds us of life, its dark but beautiful passions. A constant struggle between the noir of obsession that inspires the light that surrounds us. We constantly battle the demands from the reality of our existence against that need to feed our dark passions, those elements of our souls that must be feed so we can shine. Born to Be Blue reminds us to find and chase those passions, but to find the balance between love and a benign existence to be joyous in what we do. Let the dark be beautiful and love change us for the better . . Or slip into that indulgent obsession. Billiant!

You always hear that term being thrown around, "He is a revelation." May I just say, that Ethan.... His best work in years. Now let me qualify that by saying, Ethan is a consummate professional but just maybe this role hit me between the eyes. I have not been this moved by an a movie in awhile. Ethan is so vulnerable and real, it's just unbelievable. Thank you Mr. Hawke.

As a tribute to the late, great Chet Baker, Ethan Hawke's performance is spot on. However, to make up for the just OK script, more of Chet's music - performed by Chet Baker in full-length renditions - could have been included.

I’m adding this film to those Hawke films I’ve loved. Here he plays a musician with a gift and a habit and the drive to reconcile his need for both. Chet had trained himself to play courageously and fearlessly on heroin and to undo it is like undoing his embouchure to attempt something different, though not necessarily better. It’s best, sometimes, to accept people as they are—imperfect and burdened, until they by themselves are driven to change. If not, and if you can’t handle it, then walk away. Terrific film, and worth the moment when Hawke performs My Funny Valentine. Bravo.

Outstanding. He's always been a great actor, but he is truly brilliant in this film. The oil is probably 4 stars but Hawke makes the 5th..as the late great Chet Baker..

Ethan Hawke can do no wrong right now. He delivers a spot on, flawless performance of the incomparable Chet Baker (who knew Hawke could sing - he flawless rendition of Baker classic My Funny Valentine is incredibly moving). Carmen Ejogo is a discovery every time she appears on screen and their chemistry together is palpable. Hawke’s performance if the best of any actor so far this year
